About me

I'm a Fine Artist Painter/Printmaker living and working in Oxford.

I'm also a member of O.P.C - Oxford Printmakers Co-operative where I regularly teach adult Print Courses  (www.oxfordprintmakers.co.uk) and I also use the O.P.C Workshop facilities to prepare, develop and Print my work using the fully euquipped Print Workshop and beautiful Rochat Etching Presses.

My main specialism has involved creating Collagraph prints which I first began in 1997 after becoming interested in this 'Safe Print' process, having previously worked with Etching and Woodcut print techniques. I began exploring Collagraph Print by combining it with my interest in creating compositions with strong tonal values based on collections of personal objects both man-made and natural. The hand picked objects became transformed and reinterpreted through the Collaging process, by using a strong light source directly onto the staged composition and finally by the creation of a printed image, reversed from my initial drawing which in the process of making the Collagraph plate is 'Collaged over'.

The images also explore my interest with memories, time passing and the values we place on collected objects; the experiences they can represent, the meanings reflected back to the viewer from the objects chosen, lit and arranged and which form part of our 'Interior Landscape'.

Drawing is the starting point, and an important part of developing the composition of the Collagraph plate. Lighting onto the objects is used to explore my interest in the strong contrasts of light and intense shadows. The lighting is carefully directed, helping to transform and invite an element of play and distortion.

I hope to recreate and share with the audience images reflecting a personal space.

Alongside my Prints based on Collections, I've also created a series of prints based on the beautiful plant collections at the Oxford Botanical Gardens. The drawings for these Collagraphs were all created on site, directly from the plant life at the Botanical Gardens. I've explored combining 'Chine Colle' with the Collagraph at the printing stage to add the 'Torn' Coloured Papers, a technique I've recently developed further by hand inking the 'torn papers' with colour blends. Blind embossed Prints have also been created from my on site botanical drawings.

Collagraph & Monoprint

Collagraph & Mixed Media Print processes I use for Printmaking

As the name - derived from the Greek 'Kollo' meaning 'to glue' suggests this Printmaking form is a Collage based process where the Collagraph plates are made by sticking and gluing different types of materials onto your Printing plate which is then sealed with a type of varnish ready for Printing.

My Collagraph plates have been made using materials such as sandpapers, scrunched up newsprint, masking tape, PVA glue, wallpapers and carborundum. I also cut into the top surface of the Mountcard which is the material I use as the base for making my Collagraph plates. The cut out sections create dark lines and dark tonal areas.

The Collagraphs are inked up using the same inking techniques as used for Etching plates and I always print my Collagraphs using a Printing Press as this provides the heavy pressure needed to transfer my image onto the paper.
